About The Role

The Manufacturing Functional Consultant - Robotics & CNC supports the Factory Process / Industrial Engineering Lead by defining and detailing the shop-floor functional requirements for discrete manufacturing processes, with a particular focus on CNC machining, robotic assembly lines, automated inspection/testing, and material-handling interfaces.

The role works directly with manufacturing users, machine OEMs, robotics integrators, automation vendors, MES/digital teams, and package managers to translate production operations into clear functional workflows, use cases, system requirements, and acceptance scenarios.

The position combines hands-on manufacturing-domain knowledge with functional consulting capability, ensuring that automation solutions reflect how the shop floor must operate during normal production, product changeovers, equipment faults, quality failures, rework, maintenance interventions, and other real-world operating conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Develop detailed shop-floor functional workflows for CNC machining, robotic assembly, inspection, testing, material movement, and supporting production activities. Translate manufacturing operations into functional requirements, use cases, user stories, process logic, and acceptance criteria for automation, controls, MES, and digital teams. Develop detailed process maps, swimlane diagrams, station workflows, sequence diagrams, and exception-flow diagrams covering interactions between operators, machines, robots, PLCs, MES, quality systems, and material-handling systems. Support CNC shop-floor functional design covering, production-order release and job sequencing, CNC program and recipe selection, machine and pallet assignment, tool and fixture readiness, robotic / automated machine tending, first-part setup and probing, in-process and post-process inspection, CMM routing, OK / rework / reject disposition, buffering and downstream material release. Define functional requirements for robotic assembly cells and automated assembly lines, including, part and variant identification, automated loading and unloading, fixture and jig selection, robotic pick/place and positioning, fastening and torque operations, adhesive / sealant dispensing, insertion and joining operations, harness and connector assembly, vision-based inspection, station interlocks, station progression and routing, test and quality gates. Analyse manufacturing exception scenarios such as machine downtime, robot faults, missing parts, incorrect variants, failed inspections, failed torque, failed tests, blocked downstream stations, rework, quarantine, and manual recovery. Define and document normal, abnormal, and recovery workflows so that automation vendors design for real shop-floor operating conditions rather than only nominal production cycles. Work with MES and digital teams to define shop-floor transactions and system behaviour, including production-order execution, operation confirmations, serial tracking, genealogy, material consumption, routing, WIP status, quality results, rework, holds, and production exceptions. Support alignment between SAP / MES processes and physical shop-floor execution, while detailed SAP configuration remains with the relevant specialist team. Review vendor functional design specifications, control philosophies, station descriptions, sequence-of-operation documents, and interface definitions for compliance with manufacturing requirements. Maintain functional requirement traceability across process requirements, vendor designs, test cases, and final acceptance. Participate in design workshops, vendor reviews, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, and production trials. Develop detailed functional test scenarios covering end-to-end production, product variants, station failures, rework loops, quality exceptions, and system recovery. Support the Process Lead with shop-floor observations, cycle-time studies, bottleneck identification, process-data collection, and production ramp-up activities

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Production Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, master’s in business administration or related discipline. 5-8 years of experience in discrete manufacturing, manufacturing consulting, industrial engineering, automation functional design, or production-system implementation. Strong practical understanding of CNC machining shop-floor operations, including machining centers, pallets, fixtures, tooling, probing, machine tending, CMM inspection, and production routing. Good understanding of robotic assembly lines and automated workcells, including robots, fixtures, fastening, dispensing, vision inspection, part handling, and station-to-station flow. Demonstrated experience converting manufacturing operations into functional requirements, workflows, use cases, process maps, or functional specifications. Experience conducting manufacturing workshops and working directly with production, engineering, quality, automation, and digital stakeholders. Ability to understand manufacturing equipment behaviour, production constraints, exception scenarios, and automation-system interfaces. Experience supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning, or manufacturing-system go-live activities.

Preferred Qualifications

Functional consulting experience within smart factory, manufacturing transformation, MES, or industrial automation programs. Experience with CNC automation, robotic machine tending, automated assembly lines, CMM/metrology, vision systems, or automated testing. Exposure to MES and SAP manufacturing processes, including production orders, routings, confirmations, material movements, quality, and traceability. Experience in aerospace, defense, automotive, electronics, precision engineering, or other complex discrete manufacturing environments. Familiarity with process-mapping tools such as Visio, Signavio, Lucidchart, ARIS, or equivalent. Working knowledge of ISA-95 concepts, MES-to-shop-floor integration and industrial automation would be advantageous.
