JOB TITLE: GIS Assistant
LOCATION: Aden 
REPORTING TO: IM/GIS Officer (1RO); Programme Officer (2RO)

MAIN DESCRIPTION

Reporting directly to the IM/GIS Officer, the GIS Assistant will be playing an important role in information management by providing support and geospatial products to the teams in the field and programme management, ensuring that data is fit for the purpose, and improving the programme’s GIS capabilities. This role includes extensive training in GIS, a strong willingness to learn new skills is essential to be successful in this role. GIS work experience is desirable, but not required.

Key Responsibilities 

The GIS Assistant is responsible for:

1.    Support field operations with training, data, maps and GIS tools. 
2.    Support field teams with the setup and use of ArcGIS Survey123, ArcGIS Field Maps, and Trimble GNSS receivers.
3.    Conduct the QA & QC of spatial data coming from the field, and of operational data submitted to IM/GIS Officer, to ensure the data is fit for purpose.
4.    Produce GIS mapping products for the programme management and reporting.
5.    Maintain GIS web maps and feature services and make suggestions for improvements.
6.    Maintain Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps offline maps for use in the field by operations teams.
7.    Support data management in HALO’s Global Operations Information Management System (GO-IMS).
8.    Use HALO internal data, open source, and other data with Information Management and GIS tools to understand the presence and impact of mines and other explosives.
9.    Support in the accurate and timely submission of HALO to Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA), the national database owned by the Mine Action Centre.
10.    Translation support.
11.    Perform any other related IM/GIS duties as required.

Role Requirements 

Essential

  • Strong desire and motivation to learn GIS and technology and put it into good use.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS theory and use of ArcGIS or QGIS software.
  • Experience delivering training and good presentational skills.
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Excellent level of English.
  • Willing to travel to different locations in the South of Yemen.
  • Able to work with people of different backgrounds, cultures, and religions.
  • Resilient, with the ability to adapt in a complex, fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Desirable skills

  • Experience in utilising SQL for reporting and data manipulation
  • Knowledge and recent work experience working with GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS technology including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Survey123, and QGIS

Terms and conditions: General terms, conditions and requirements will be in line with those for HALO national staff and your contract.

Work routine: Five days per week for eight hours per day, with Friday and Saturday being rest days, notwithstanding travel and non-routine events.  

Travel and leave:

1.    Your annual leave entitlement as per your HALO contract and Staff Handbook.
2.    This position will be based out of Aden and may require travel to visit teams and assess future areas of operations.
