Reports To: School Bus Driver, Transportation Coordinator

Work Schedule: Part-Time/Full-Time (As per school schedule)
Job Summary:
The School Bus Attendant plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students during their commute to and from school. The attendant assists the bus driver in managing student behavior, ensuring that all students are properly seated and following safety protocols, and helping students with special needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Supervision:
Monitor students on the bus to ensure they are seated properly and behaving appropriately.
Address any inappropriate behavior following school policies and guidelines.
Assist in ensuring students enter and exit the bus safely.
Safety Management:
Ensure all students are wearing seat belts where applicable.
Assist in the loading and unloading of students, especially those with disabilities or special needs.
Conduct headcounts before and after each trip to ensure all students are accounted for.
Communication:
Communicate effectively with the bus driver regarding any issues or incidents on the bus.
Act as a liaison between the school administration, parents, and the bus driver when necessary.
Report any safety concerns or student-related issues to the appropriate school personnel.
Emergency Preparedness:
Be familiar with the bus’s emergency procedures and equipment.
Assist in conducting emergency drills and ensuring students are aware of safety protocols.
Provide assistance in case of an emergency, including first aid if trained and necessary.
Support for Students with Special Needs:
Assist students with special needs in boarding, seating, and exiting the bus.
Ensure that any necessary equipment, such as wheelchairs or safety harnesses, is properly secured.
Provide additional care and attention as required by students with disabilities or health conditions.
Bus Maintenance Support:
Help maintain a clean and orderly bus environment by assisting with light cleaning and ensuring no obstructions are in the aisles.
Report any maintenance issues to the bus driver or transportation coordinator.
Additional Duties:
Perform other related duties as assigned by the bus driver or transportation coordinator.
Attend training sessions and meetings as required to stay informed of safety procedures and school policies.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Previous experience working with children, particularly in a supervisory or support role, is preferred.
Skills:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to remain calm and act quickly in emergencies.
Patience and a caring attitude toward students, especially those with special needs.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to assist in lifting or moving students who require physical assistance.
Capability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
Ability to tolerate exposure to outdoor weather conditions during boarding and deboarding.
Work Environment:
The role primarily involves working on a moving school bus and outdoors during loading/unloading times.
Interaction with children and potentially stressful situations, such as managing student behavior or responding to emergencies.
Compensation:
Hourly wage or salary based on experience and school district pay scales.
