A Construction Manager – Civil is responsible for managing all civil construction activities in an electrical substation project (e.g., 33kV, 132kV, 220kV, or higher). The role ensures that civil works such as foundations, structures, roads, and drainage are completed safely, according to design, within schedule, and within budget.
- Review civil drawings, specifications, and construction scope for the substation.
- Develop and monitor construction schedules for civil works.
- Coordinate civil activities with electrical and mechanical installation teams.
- Plan sequencing for:
- Earthworks
- Foundations
- Equipment structures
- Buildings and infrastructure.
- Manage site clearing, excavation, grading, and leveling.
- Supervise cut and fill operations to achieve required platform levels.
- Ensure proper soil compaction and ground improvement.
- Coordinate geotechnical requirements based on soil investigation reports.
Foundations for Electrical Equipment
Supervise construction of foundations for major substation equipment such as:
- Power transformer foundations
- Circuit breaker foundations
- Gantry structures
- Bus support structures
- CT/VT and isolator foundations
Ensure foundations meet load requirements, anchor bolt positioning, and tolerances.
Substation Buildings & Structures
Oversee construction of:
- Control building
- Relay room
- GIS building (if applicable)
- Security buildings and guard houses
- Cable cellars and trenches
Ensure buildings comply with structural and architectural specifications.
Cable Trenches & Duct Banks
- Supervise construction of cable trenches, cable ducts, and cable vaults.
- Ensure proper routing and spacing for electrical cables.
- Coordinate trench construction with electrical installation teams.
Drainage & Stormwater Management
- Ensure installation of substation drainage systems.
- Supervise construction of:
- Oil containment pits for transformers
- Stormwater drains
- Water collection systems.
- Ensure proper slope and water flow away from equipment areas.
Roads, Fencing & External Works
Manage construction of:
- Internal access roads and pavements
- Equipment access routes for heavy transport
- Boundary walls and security fencing
- Gates and site entrances.
8. Grounding Grid Civil Works Support
Coordinate civil works required for installation of the substation grounding grid, ensuring proper trenching and backfilling for earthing conductors.
Material & Resource Management
- Coordinate procurement and delivery of construction materials such as:
- Concrete
- Reinforcement steel
- Structural steel
- Precast elements
- Manage manpower, equipment, and subcontractors.
Testing & Inspection
- Supervise and verify:
- Concrete slump tests
- Cube strength tests
- Soil compaction tests
- Reinforcement inspections before concreting.
Progress Monitoring & Reporting
- Track daily progress of civil works.
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports.
- Identify delays and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with project managers, consultants, and clients.
