The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide range of heavy machinery and vehicles, ensuring operational efficiency and safety. This role requires expertise in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, particularly those found in diesel-powered equipment.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnosis and Troubleshooting:
* Inspect and test heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders) to detect faults and malfunctions.
* Utilize diagnostic tools, computerized testing equipment, and technical manuals to determine the extent of repair required.
* Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system issues.
* Repair and Maintenance:
* Perform complex repairs, including disassembling, repairing, and reassembling major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and braking systems.
* Adjust, repair, or replace defective parts, components, or systems using hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
* Fabricate, modify, or install replacement parts or special equipment as needed.
* Preventive Maintenance:
* Conduct routine maintenance and safety inspections on equipment (e.g., oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements) to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life.
* Service and maintain working tools and attachments.
* Maintain accurate and detailed records of all repairs, maintenance activities, and parts inventory.
* Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company, safety, and regulatory standards.
* Teamwork and Support:
* Collaborate with other mechanics, operators, and supervisors to schedule and coordinate maintenance tasks.
* Provide on-site field service and emergency repairs as required (for Field Mechanic roles).
Skills
* Completion of a vocational, technical, or apprenticeship program in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field is often preferred.
* Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification, ASE Certifications) are a major asset.
* Experience:
* Proven experience (typically 3-5+ years) as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic working on diesel engines and heavy machinery.
* Technical Knowledge:
* In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, power trains, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and electrical circuits.
* Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
* Skilled in using a variety of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, hoists, and diagnostic software.
* Soft Skills:
* Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work without direct supervision.
* Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.
