Head of Radioactive Waste Disposal Program

Job Purpose: Manage the development and execution of the radioactive waste disposal program including disposal facilities designs, review of associated safety case and assessments, engagement with Radioactive Waste Producers, and performing R&D activities to support development of the program in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.


Activity: Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Disposal Program and Plans


  • Develop radioactive waste disposal program; including plans, timelines and cost estimations.
  • Develop spent fuel disposal program; including plans, timelines and cost estimations.
  • Provide technical support in development of ENEC Enterprise long and short-term strategies associated to disposal of radioactive waste and spent fuel management.
  • Manage projects and initiatives associated with Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Disposal.


Activity: Radioactive Waste Disposal Design and Safety Case Review


  • Lead the development of Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities Design, including the evolution and associated iterations of the design stages of the disposal facilities.
  • Conduct review of the Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities Safety Case, including associated Safety Assessments and Waste Acceptance Criteria.
  • Implement Engineering and Quality standards in development of disposal solutions.
  • Provide design inputs for development of applicable safety assessments and the safety case of such facilities.


Activity: Development of Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Research and Development Programs


  • Develop Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Disposal R&D Programs and associated roadmaps.
  • Support the development of Spent Fuel Research and Development Program.
  • Manage, in conjunction with ENEC RND Division, R&D projects associated with Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Disposal.
  • Interface, in conjunction with ENEC RND Division, with academic institutions any other relevant organizations for the development of R&D for radioactive waste and spent fuel management.
  • Lead and/or support conducting Technical Evaluations on proposals associated with R&D for RWM and SFM.
  • Identify the need for a R&D initiative that will ultimately support the disposal of radioactive waste and spent fuel.


Activity:  Radioactive Waste Disposal Program Stakeholder Management and Engagement


  • Support the RWM Division Management with interfaces with internal functions on the Radioactive Waste Design and Program development, including providing inputs to the Radioactive Waste Management Working Group and the Radioactive Waste Advisory Committee.
  • Engage key stakeholders such as Radioactive Waste Producers and FANR on the requirements of disposal of radioactive waste and spent fuel.
  • Provide input to requests from national and international stakeholders regards to radioactive waste disposal program.


Activity: Radioactive Waste Management Disposal Facility Licensing and Permitting Requirements


  • Ensure compliance with all national legislation, regulations and requirements associated with the disposal of radioactive waste.
  • Support the development of license applications for the siting, construction, and operations of radioactive waste disposal facilities in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
  • Support the development of responses to relevant requests from FANR related to the licensing process as well as other relevant requirements from national regulatory bodies.


Skills

Academic Qualification and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other relevant Science Subject
  • 7 years in developing design, safety analysis and assessment associated with radioactive waste management facilities.
  • Experience in dealing with nuclear and other regulatory agencies.
