As Paint Controller you are responsible for the direct supervision of staff for the total restoration of the exterior finish of the aircraft by, masking, de-painting and reapplying the finishing/polishing on the aircraft. Responsible for the inspections of the tasks to make sure they comply to the standard of corporate image regarding aircraft exterior appearance in accordance with engineering work sheets, paint manufacturer's data sheets and application of company livery from the engineering drawings.




In this role you will:



  • Responsible for the correct surface preparation of masking, abrading, cleaning, stripping plus pre-treatment of the surfaces of aircraft and the application of paint coatings to the correct procedures so as to achieve a one time application system to reduce rework. This is to be carried out in accordance with the SRM (Structure Repair Manual), AMM (Aircraft Maintenance Manual) and paint manufactures data sheets and to adhere to the correct mixing, induction timing, viscosity and flash off between coats.
  • Positioning and application of the Airline's livery and lines as per two dimensional engineering drawings and the artist impressions and be able to reproduce it on the aircraft in a three dimensional manner so that it is optically and aesthetically correct. Application of markings in the correct location and colour to the airline's standard and in accordance with aircraft manufacturer's AMM (Aircraft Maintenance Manual), CMM (Component Maintenance Manual) and mandatory marks of the GCAA.
  • Must be fully capable of the corrosion control in Class 1 standard and the treatment and prevention thereof to the exterior of the aircraft structures. Identify other corrosion which may be observed during the stripping/abrading which requires additional assessment into the category of Class 1, 2 & 3. Bring it to the attention of the Senior Engineer Paint Hall and Aircraft Engineer in order for them to taken the appropriate action.
  • Responsible for the supervision of Paint Technicians working on A&C Checks where foundation paint work is needed, as well as providing advice on the correct rectification procedure. The correct installation of Commercial Campaigns Decals as required by the airline, ensuring the correct work assessment is available.
  • Before the application of coating an inspection of the aerodynamic sealant is to be carried out after application. Instruct and manage the reworking of sealants for any defects so as to achieve its aerodynamic purpose and for it not to distract from the aesthetic appearance.
  • Exercise health and safety procedures pertaining to the tasks carried out and ensuring that all staff are using the correct safety equipment, liaising with the Senior Eng paint hangar to ensure that all docking and equipment are safe before the commencing of the tasks.
  • Adjusting equipment and tools used in the restoration of aircraft finishing and materials, and the usage thereof to achieve an excellent overall finish. Ensuring the maintenance of tools and equipment in the relevant work place is carried out regularly and report any discrepancies to the Senior Eng Paint hangar for immediate action.
  • Operate electrostatic spray equipment to the required standard and be especially diligent with its safety aspects i.e. grounding of equipment, handling the guns so as to not accidently inject the product into the body due to the high pressure of the equipment. Be aware of the products which are not compatible with equipment, and optimize the use of these guns to produce an excellent overall appearance from experience.
  • Complete company documentation as required to verify that procedures have been carried out in accordance with airworthiness standards.
  • Must liaise and communicate at various levels with other areas over technical issues, in order that all the relevant parties are aware of the aircrafts status plus involvement in the pre task inspection high lighting the discrepancies which involves other trades so that the Senior Engineer Paint Hall who can then raise the necessary documents and inform the other trades of the required actions.
Qualification

To be considered for this role, you should meet the below criteria:



  • Experience in Engineering for 10+ years
  • Higher / National Diploma (12+2 or equivalent) or Apprenticeship in Engineering, Automotive or a related industry or equivalent training with a reputable airline, approved maintenance organisation.
  • Experience in post training.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years aircraft refinishing experience.
  • Must have managed a team of junior painters/abraders and carried out the on the job (OJT) required in the correct masking, abrading and painting procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety, human factors, and general aircraft engineering practices pertaining to aircraft painting.
  • Knowledge of aircraft manuals and engineering drawings pertaining to the rework of paint finishes and correct application of markings.
  • Knowledge of different coating systems and the application there of.
