Job purpose / objective
The senior 2-stroke engine design engineer leads the development and validation of production design for mechanical components, ensuring compliance with licensor standards, performance, and quality requirements. The role involves overseeing design documentation, resolving complex engineering issues during production, supporting acceptance testing, and providing advanced technical guidance post-commissioning. The engineer also contributes to process optimization, supplier interface, and cross-functional support for engine development projects.
Key accountabilities
- Lead the development of the design system including 2D/3D CAD models compatible with the licensor’s platform, and drive the establishment of technology and drawing standards.
- Serve as a key liaison with the licensor and technical partners to secure technical support, resolve engineering issues, and stay informed on design advancements and trends.
- Design structural engine components such as the bedplate, frame box, cylinder frame, and moving parts with a focus on robustness and manufacturability.
- Oversee CAD modeling of engine assemblies, ensuring full alignment with licensor specifications and company standards.
- Validate and approve detailed parts lists and technical drawings to ensure supplier readiness and accurate, timely purchase order requests (PORs).
- Provide advanced technical support to other business lines during client discussions, including selecting engine models and preparing extent of delivery (EOD) documents based on POS review.
- Lead troubleshooting of major engine performance or quality concerns during production and customer inspections (e.g., vibration, noise, misalignment).
- Manage and close critical non-conformity reports (NCRs) and maintain the list of differences (LOD) in coordination with the licensor.
- Recommend and implement design optimizations to improve cost-efficiency, material usage, and production throughput.
- Mentor junior design engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing across the design function.
- Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the line manager.
Qualifications, person specification, competencies, and experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering (or related field).
Professional qualification
Professionally recognized certifications are preferable, such as:
- Project management (e.g., PMP)
- CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD)
Person specification
- Proficient in advanced computer-aided design (CAD) software tools and modeling techniques.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, tolerancing, and manufacturing feasibility.
- Solid working knowledge of licensor design codes, IMO regulations, and relevant classification society rules.
