Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Overview

The Generator Electrical Engineer oversees the complete lifecycle of diesel, gas, and hybrid power generation systems. This role focuses on executing precise electrical installations, commissioning complex backup power plants, and diagnosing system-critical faults to ensure continuous power delivery for industrial, commercial, or utility sites.

Key Responsibilities

1. Installation & Commissioning Engineering

  • Supervise the physical installation and layout of generators, switchgear, and fuel systems.

  • Manage electrical integration of Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and Paralleling Switchgear.

  • Conduct comprehensive factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) including load bank evaluations.

  • Verify that cable terminations, grounding grids, and lightning protection systems meet local electrical codes.

2. Diagnostics & Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose complex electrical faults using root cause analysis (RCA) on alternators and control systems.

  • Troubleshoot issues with digital voltage regulators (AVR), speed governors, and protection relays.

  • Analyze electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and PLC code to isolate systemic control failures.

  • Respond to critical emergency power failures to minimize facility downtime.

3. System Control & Synchronization

  • Program and configure multi-generator synchronization, load sharing, and peak-shaving control schemes.

  • Fine-tune controller parameters for major industrial brands like Deep Sea, ComAp, and Woodward.

  • Integrate generator monitoring infrastructure into broader building management systems (BMS or SCADA).

4. Quality, Safety & Maintenance Management

  • Develop and execute data-driven preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.

  • Enforce strict lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety programs and Arc Flash risk controls.

  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, including updated as-built drawings, testing logs, and compliance records.

Desired Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.

  • Experience: Minimum 4+ years of field experience focusing on commercial or utility-scale generators (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, Perkins, Kohler).

  • Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of power generation physics, three-phase systems, protection coordination, and rotating machinery electrical design. [1]

  • Tools: Proficiency with multimeters, insulation testers (Megger), power quality analyzers, and diagnostic software.

  • Soft Skills: Ability to think critically under operational pressure during emergency system outages
