Job Details

  1. Prepares tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis.

  2. Gross descriptions of small, uncomplicated specimens are recorded where appropriate, using specific terminology according to procedure.

  3. Tissue samples are prepared using correct procedures for preservation including processing, freezing and embedding as appropriate per procedure.

  4. Tissue samples are sectioned using good microtomy techniques on microtomes to produce acceptable quality slides for staining according to procedures.

  5. Workload is prioritized and managed to meet expected Turn Around Times TATs.

  6. Competence is maintained and new skills added as technology changes.

  7. Stains tissue for Routine, Special Stains, Immunofluorescence, Immunohistochemistry and Enzyme Histochemistry as requested.

  8. Chemical solutions and stains are prepared, labelled and stored accurately according to procedure and need.

  9. Stains are accurately performed and Quality Control QC results recorded. Stain quality is evaluated for acceptability prior to release of histological sections to the ordering pathologist.

  10. Stain quality results are communicated to the supervisor and or ordering pathologist.

  11. New stains are developed and instituted as needed by working in conjunction with the supervisor, pathology staff and other technicians.

  12. Maintains and operates laboratory equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and procedures.

  13. Instrumentation necessary for Histology functions is operated within the manufacturers guidelines and according to procedures.

  14. Instrument malfunctions are recognized and troubleshooting is performed to ensure accurate operation. Instrument maintenance is performed and documented on a scheduled basis.

  15. Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply with those requirements.

  16. Work in accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions and specific responsibilities.

  17. Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.

  18. Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk assessments and incident reports.

  19. Comply with Waste management procedures and policies.

  20. Attend applicable OSH and Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs.

  21. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety system.

General Responsibilities

  1. Work in all shifts as scheduled by the Section in Charge or Head of Histopathology Department.

  2. Strictly adheres to organizations regulations and policies especially those related to infection control, patient safety, OSHAD, DOH, DHA, MOH, JCI and ISO.

  3. Supports Continuous Quality Improvement and participates and contributes to all the quality assurance activities of the service.

  4. Participates and contributes to scheduled in service training programs.

  5. Exercises effective interpersonal skills in dealings with department staff, associates and Management.

  6. Maintains confidentiality as per the agreement signed.

  7. Demonstrates the ability to listen to others in promoting effective communication.

  8. Develops thorough understanding of policies and procedures of the hospital and demonstrates respect for them.

  9. Carries out other duties when requested by the Head of Histopathology Department.

Desired Candidate Profile

  1. Valid DOH or DHA License as Lab Technologist with Histology experience.

  2. B Sc in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent qualification requiring not less than 3 years training course and one year emphasis of the curriculum in the field of subspecialty in the basic qualification curriculum or certification by ASCP in the specialty.

  3. M Sc or Postgraduate qualification in that specialty from an accredited program leading to registration with ASCP, CSMLS or equivalent.

  4. Minimum two years of Medical Laboratory experience in Histopathology procedures are required for Bachelors degree holders. If Postgraduate or M Sc then one year of Medical Laboratory experience in Histopathology experience is required.

  5. Fluent in spoken and written English. Arabic language is desirable but not essential.

  6. Ability to learn and handle automation and IT programs is desirable but not essential.
