The job holder is responsible for designing, building, and operating production-grade AI agents on Microsoft Foundry — LLM-powered systems that reason, use tools, and orchestrate multi-step workflows against enterprise data and services. This is a hands-on, pro-code role: the engineer writes Python, integrates Azure services, and ships agentic applications that drive measurable business impact. The engineer works within agile teams alongside Product, Data Science, and Architecture to take agent use cases from prototype to production.
Key Responsibilities:
AI Agent Development on Microsoft Foundry Design, build, and deploy pro-code AI agents on Microsoft Foundry, leveraging its agent framework, model catalogue, and tool/function-calling capabilities. Integrate agents with Palantir Foundry via MCP (Model Context Protocol) to fetch enterprise data and execute Ontology actions, alongside other tool, retrieval, memory, and multi-agent orchestration patterns in Python. Build evaluation harnesses and guardrails (groundedness, safety, cost, latency) and iterate on prompts, tools, and architectures based on measured outcomes. LLM Engineering & Productionization Apply prompt engineering, structured output, RAG, and grounding techniques appropriate to each use case. Operate agents in production: observability, tracing, cost monitoring, regression testing, and incident response. Manage versioning of prompts, tools, and agent configurations alongside code. Azure & Platform Integration Integrate with Azure services (Azure Open AI, AI Search, Storage, Functions, Container Apps, Key Vault, Entra ID) to deliver secure, scalable agent solutions. Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for agent deployment, including automated evals as a release gate. Implement authentication, authorization, secret management, and data-handling patterns aligned with enterprise security standards. Cross-functional Collaboration Work closely with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and IT Architects to translate agent use cases into delivery plans. Communicate trade-offs (model choice, latency, cost, accuracy) clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Champion agentic patterns and reusable components across the engineering organization.
Qualifications:Software engineering experience with hands-on production experience building LLM-based / agentic systems (tool use, orchestration, RAG, evals). Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related quantitative field Advanced degrees preferred. Strong Python — idiomatic, typed, tested; comfortable with async and modern packaging Proven experience building production AI agents in code (e.g. Microsoft Foundry / Azure AI Foundry, Semantic Kernel, Auto Gen, Lang Graph, Llama Index, Open AI Agents SDK, or equivalent custom frameworks) Microsoft Foundry experience strongly preferred (agent authoring, model catalog, connectors, deployment) Azure exposure — Azure Open AI, AI Search, identity, storage, serverless compute; familiarity with Azure Dev Ops or Git Hub Actions Deep working knowledge of LLM application patterns: tool/function calling, structured outputs, RAG, memory, multi-agent orchestration Experience with evaluation frameworks and observability for LLM systems (tracing, prompt/response logging, automated evals) Dev Ops fundamentals: Git, CI/CD, containers, infrastructure-as-code; exposure to data engineering and vector stores is a plus High-energy, ownership-driven mindset Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Excellent communication and collaboration abilities Comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving clarity Experience in agile/start-up environments preferred Track record of taking AI/ML or agent projects from prototype to production
Forward Deployed Engineers turn what Luma's models can do into systems customers actually rely on. You embed with a customer, learn their workflow, define the problem with them, and build the production system that solves it, with their data and their constraints. You own both the relationship and the code.

This is engineering at the edge, where ambiguity is the default and "what should we build?" is yours to answer. It's built for people who've already been the single point of ownership on a hard problem: a technical founder, the engineer who flew out and rebuilt a customer's workflow, a consultant who actually wrote the system. If you need a PRD and a well-defined ticket queue, this isn't it.

What You'll Own

Work directly with customers to understand their workflows, constraints, and goals, and define the problem yourself. Build production systems on Luma's APIs, models, and internal tools. Prototype, ship, iterate, and maintain systems customers depend on in real environments with real data. Own projects end to end, from first conversation to deployed system. Build around platform gaps when something's missing, and feed recurring patterns back to platform and R&D to productize. Use AI to accelerate implementation, while the core of the work stays engineering judgment: what to build and how to make it reliable.

First 90 Days

One way the first 90 could unfold.

Days 1–30 — Immerse & Diagnose: Embed with a first customer, learn their workflow, and define the real problem. Days 30–60 — Ship & Validate: Build and deploy a production system they actually use. Days 60–90 — Scale & Systemize: Spot the pattern worth productizing and work with R&D to turn it into platform.

What You Bring

2+ years of professional software engineering, with software shipped end to end. Strong proficiency in at least one general-purpose language (Python, Type Script, Go, or similar). Ability to work across the stack and learn unfamiliar systems quickly. Bachelor's in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience. Willingness to travel to client sites as needed.

Nice to Have

A track record of shipping real systems with real users, not just assigned tasks. High agency and strong prioritization: you find the core problem and move. Comfort defining your own path when there isn't one. Evidence of working directly with customers and translating what you heard into what you built. Clear communication, including explaining a technical decision to a non-technical stakeholder.

Luma's mission is to build unified general intelligence that can generate, understand, and operate in the physical world. We believe multimodality is critical for intelligence — the next step beyond language models comes from vision. Luma is an equal opportunity employer.
