Plans the service interval for every plant item and vehicle the Company holds, against running hours, mileage and the manufacturer's requirement, and brings each machine in when it falls due. Sets the schedule around the work the operating functions have in hand, so a machine is off the job no longer than its service takes.</p></li><li><p>Breakdown response and repair. Takes in every defect reported from the yard, the site and the road, ranks it by safety and by the urgency of the work the machine is on, and puts it to the bench. Diagnoses the fault, decides the repair, and sees the machine through to a tested working condition.</p></li><li><p>The trades in the workshop. Directs the mechanics and electricians at the bench: the day's assignments, the standard each job is finished to, and the check before it is closed.
